Ingredients

Be sure to see the recipe card below for the full listing of ingredients, instructions, notes, and estimated nutritional information.

For this easy chicken recipe, you’ll need just two simple ingredients:

  • Chicken – I generally use boneless, skinless chicken breasts since that’s what my family prefers in most of my chicken dishes. However, use whatever cut of chicken you prefer! I even have an Instant Pot rotisserie-style chicken recipe that I think you might enjoy if you like to prepare a whole chicken to use for meal prep during the week or for a single meal.
  • Water – For my Instant Pot, I add 1/2 cup of water to the chicken. Be sure to read the instructions for your pressure cooker to ensure how much liquid you should add to your appliance.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Add chicken and water to the Instant Pot. Close the vent and set to High pressure for 10 minutes.
  2. Use the quick-release method to release the pressure from the Instant Pot.
  3. Remove the chicken and use it in your favorite chicken recipes.

From that point, you can use your pressure cooker chicken any way that you desire, from serving it with side dishes to shredding it to use in all sorts of recipes. I like to do both!

I’ve shared with you before how I like to make shredded chicken for the week to use in recipes using my slow cooker. I still do. Sometimes, I’ll use the slow cooker and sometimes I’ll use the pressure cooker and sometimes I’ll bake it in the oven. It depends on the mood I’m in. Thankful that we have so many options!

FAQs

Is it possible to overcook chicken in Instant Pot? ›

While all cuts of chicken are fair game for the Instant Pot, thighs are the most forgiving. Because chicken breast is so lean, just a couple of extra minutes of cook time turns them from juicy to overcooked and dry.

How much chicken can you put in an Instant Pot? ›

Add trivet into instant pot, add 1 cup water, add whole chicken or 1-2 chicken legs (in one layer), 2-4 chicken thighs (in one layer), 2-6 chicken drumsticks (in one layer), 1-4 chicken breasts (in one layer), 2-12 chicken wings in one layer.

Does chicken get more tender the longer you cook it in an Instant Pot? ›

Can you overcook chicken breast in an Instant Pot? Yes, you can! Pressure Cookers don't work the same as slow cookers, where longer cooking times equal more juicy and tender meat. Too much time in a pressure cooker will create dry tough meat.

Why does my Instant Pot chicken come out rubbery? ›

Is it better to slow cook or pressure cook chicken breast? ›

Chicken breasts are a less ideal choice for slow cooking. One reason why you shouldn't make boneless chicken breasts in a slow cooker is because they're too low in fat to withstand cooking for a long time. Your final product will likely come out tough and chewy.

How to cook a lot of chicken at once? ›

Use multiple cooking pots: If you need to cook a large amount of chicken, you may need multiple pots, like multiple slow cookers or roasting pans. You'll want to avoid overstuffing a single pot so the chicken can cook evenly and thoroughly.

How long do you can chicken in a pressure cooker? ›

Once you're getting 4 “jiggles” per minute, or your dial gauge has come up to pressure, start your timer and process the chicken. If you're canning pint jars, you will process them for 1 hour 15 minutes (75 minutes). If you're using quart jars, you will process for 1 hour 30 minutes (90 minutes).

Do you cover meat with liquid in pressure cooker? ›

There's lots of water in the meat too, so even 1 cup added water will result in a fair amount of liquid after cooking. No you do not have to cover it. I usually do about 2 cups or so of stock.

What is the best meat to pressure cook? ›

Why is some chicken hard and rubbery? ›

Overcooking chicken and buying woody chicken breast are two of the main causes behind rubbery chicken. You can stop this from happening by: buying “slow-growing” chicken. cooking your chicken in moisture.

How long does it take to cook chicken? ›

Does pressure cooking longer make meat more tender? ›

Pressure cooking, like slow cooking, will tenderize tough cuts of meat like beef brisket, beef chuck, pork shoulder and lots of other cheaper, tougher cuts. Pressure cooking (or slow cooking) is not the best approach for cooking expensive, tender steaks or rib roasts.

Does cooking meat longer make it more tender? ›
