Save money by making your own pumpkin pie spice with this homemade pumpkin pie spice recipe.

It’s fall, the time of year that’s all about pumpkin. In fact, since moving from Hawaii to Washington (which actually has seasons!), I’ve become a bit obsessed with pumpkins and squash every October through December. Don’t believe me? Take a look at our front railing!

RECIPE TESTING WHILE PREGNANT

I spent a good hour at the pumpkin patch picking out the best pumpkins and squash for creating and testing recipes. I couldn’t actually carry them, but hey, I have an awesome husband who emptied them from my trunk and lined them up so nicely!

This pumpkin obsession is of great benefit to you my friends, because I can’t help but share the awesome food I’m coming up with while recipe testing.

I’ve really been struggling to blog lately because of exhaustion and intermittent bed rest due to various pregnancy side effects. Not to worry, it’s nothing serious. In fact my midwife and birthing class teacher have both praised my healthy eating and all the vitamins and nutrition I’ve been getting baby through my food.

I passed my glucose test (what a nightmare) and anemia test with flying colors, and am gaining the pound a week so yay healthy pregnancy. I’m also falling in love more and more with my little wiggle worm every day!

When I do have the ability to get out of bed and be on my feet, I’m trying to paint the nursery and get the house ready for baby. My sister, husband and mother-in-law have both been a great help in that department.

But I’ve SO missed blogging, and I really appreciate the sweet messages I’ve gotten from several of you.

HOW DO I MAKE HOMEMADE PUMPKIN PIE SPICE

Making pumpkin pie spice at home is as simple as mixing a few different spices together in a jar. Plus, making your own pumpkin pie spice is not only economical, it’s also a great way to customize flavors in your holiday cooking.

For instance, my sister has an apparent ginger allergy. I say apparent because she hasn’t been tested, not because I don’t believe her. Her tongue throat tingling and itching are a good indication of an allergy. By making homemade pumpkin pie spice, she can make skip the ginger powder.

I also have a friend who thinks nutmeg overpowers everything so uses just a sprinkling in her pumpkin pie spice recipe.

You can also add ingredients to your pumpkin pie spice. For instance, cardamom is a highly fragrant spice that is a bit citrusry, floral, and minty. A tiny bit of that can elevate your pumpkin pie spice recipe to something truly gourmet.

Here are a few variations of pumpkin pie spice that you could try.

HOMEMADE PUMPKIN PIE SPICE WITHOUT GINGER

Follow the printable pumpkin pie spice recipe but skip the ginger. You will get 8 teaspoons of pumpkin pie spice instead of 10.

HOMEMADE PUMPKIN PIE SPICE WITHOUT ALL SPICE

Follow the printable pumpkin pie spice recipe but skip the all spice. You will get 9 teaspoons of pumpkin pie spice instead of 10.

HOMEMADE PUMPKIN PIE SPICE WITHOUT NUTMEG

PUMPKIN PIE SPICE RECIPE WITH CARDAMOM

Add 1/2 teaspoon of cardamom to the printable pumpkin pie spice recipe below. A little goes a long way!

ADDING TURMERIC TO HOMEMADE PUMPKIN PIE SPICE

Turmeric is a bit of an acquired flavor, but is loved for its anti-inflammatory properties.

You can definitely add turmeric to homemade pumpkin pie spice. It smells slightly of ginger and orange, but tastes pretty bitter. Fresh turmeric is less bitter but doesn’t work in pumpkin pie spice.

Try adding one teaspoon of turmeric to your pumpkin pie spice unless you know you love it. If you are wanting to make pumpkin spice golden milk (turmeric milk) or lattes, I suggest keeping your pumpkin pie spice as is, and grating some fresh turmeric into your drink.

HOW TO MAKE PUMPKIN PIE SPICE

This recipe is my favorite mix of spices for cooking with pumpkin. Notice the recipe is in nice easy whole measurements?

That’s so that I can adapt the amount as needed. I can easily use any scoop or spoon I want, so instead of two teaspoons of nutmeg, it will be two scoops. This is a great idea whenever you’re creating a spice mix recipe.

If you want to make a small recipe of pumpkin spice, just enough for a pie, use a 1/8 teaspoon to do your scoops. You’ll end up with 1 1/4 teaspoons of pumpkin spice, perfect for a pumpkin pie!

I tend to make a big jar of pumpkin pie spice the first week of October, and use it throughout the fall and winter.

Notes

Approximate cost/serving: By getting my spices from the bulk spice section I end up only paying about 30 cents or less for 3 TBS of spice mix. I've started using organic spices which does increase the cost a bit, but it's still cheaper than buying the non-organic pumpkin pie spice in a jar on the spice aisle.
