But here’s the catch: While models from India and Singapore are being studied for adoption, each country’s approach to open banking is unique. The UK mandates open data through common APIs to boost competition, India uses state-backed account aggregators for financial inclusion, and Singapore follows a hybrid, innovation-driven model guided by its central bank. Bangladesh is drafting policies for digital banks, payment service providers, and e-money issuers, but experts warn of challenges like data privacy risks, integration issues, and inconsistent regulations.

Humaira Azam, managing director of LankaBangla Finance, highlighted that traditional banking’s limited structures will give way to enhanced customer service through fintech partnerships. Arfan Ali, former managing director of Bank Asia, pointed out that open banking is already mainstream in Europe, Australia, and Canada, giving customers full control over their data. However, he stressed the need for robust customer consent, cybersecurity, and data protection laws in Bangladesh.

Sopnendu Mohanty, CEO of the Global Finance & Technology Network, noted that the term 'open' in open banking can unsettle stakeholders. While Singapore’s model is praised for its balance between regulation and innovation, India’s system is recognized as one of the most robust globally. Bangladesh’s existing platforms like the Interoperable Digital Transaction Platform (IDTP) and Bangla QR have already laid the groundwork for connectivity, but the road ahead is fraught with challenges.
