A Chronicle of Christmas Ornaments
During the 1800's, various types of ornaments decorated Christmas trees.
Down through the years, the types of ornaments we use as decorations
have changed. From flavorful fruit to balls onto personalized photograph
ornaments, Christmas ornaments evolved. We will chronicle the history
of Christmas ornaments through the past 200 years.
In the early 1800's, the first Christmas ornaments were commonly fruits
such as apples, oranges and nuts. The evergreen Christmas trees of Germany
had decorations of hard cookies that were fashioned into numerous Christmas
items such as gingerbread. Stings of bright colorful cranberries, popcorn
and other small gifts and items hung on the Christmas trees in America.
In the United Kingdom, Christmas tree ornaments were often constructed
of lace and paper. After awhile, Christmas ornaments became so trendy that
it was sometimes difficult to see the tree under the ornaments.
During the mid 1800's Christmas tree ornaments, were generally homemade
by friends and family. Eventually, German manufacturers began mass-producing
Christmas tree ornaments for the holiday season, especially for Christmas
time decorating. Although ornaments began as humble nuts, fruits and other
edibles, the Christmas ornaments of this era were glassware. These types
of ornaments began as glass replicas of various food items that were decorating
Christmas trees at that time. Eventually, glass replicas of cookie shapes
appeared as well as bells and hearts, which were of bright beautiful colors.
Ornaments became available in various sizes and shapes by Christmas in
the late 1800's. In the US, German glass ornaments were
up for sale at Woolworth's, these were generating that company several
million dollars in sales of the Christmas ornaments.
Many households made a game of Christmas ornaments. There are stories of
a glass pickle ornament that could be hidden in the Christmas tree to be
rewarded to the most observant child who could find the pickle ornament
in the Christmas tree. It is unclear, as to who may have played this game
or where it began. Stories of that time and actual traditions do not correspond,
however it is an endearing Christmas ornament story.
In the late 1800's, while Germany was producing glass ornaments, other
artisans began fashioning Christmas ornaments from other materials. These
ornaments were made of embossed or pressed paper, although eventually they
were fashioned of pressed tin, creating icicles and brilliantly colorful
lithographed Christmas ornaments.
Near the end of the Victorian era, Christmas ornaments were most often
handcrafted. Various magazines of the Victorian era, provided directions
of how to make such handcrafted ornaments. These ornaments were customarily
crafted from household items. Often, they were crochet or tatted items.
During this era, Christmas ornaments were commercially available. They
were extraordinarily colorful, quite large and some were even overly extravagant.
At this time, figurines of young children, elves and animals overtook the
Christmas scene. The beadwork, tinsel and wire decorations became very
intense.
In the early 1900's, there was a mass production of handcrafted Christmas
ornaments. Each ornament was handcrafted of glass and offered a high quality
of original handcrafted Christmas ornaments. German glass ornaments were
still ranking high in the most popular types of Christmas ornaments you
could purchase. However, eventually this changed as well.
The new century brought along a new war and between the war and the great
depression, the sale of Christmas ornaments declined. However, this trend
was short lived. Although America was struggling financially, F.W. Woolworth
decided that an American Company in New York should begin producing American
Christmas ornaments, since Christmas tree ornaments were so very popular.
The Corning Company of Corning, New York, began producing Christmas tree
ornaments in the late 1930s, when previously they made light bulbs. This
business idea took off like wildfire. Furthermore, by the early 1940s Corning
was making more than 300,000 Christmas ornaments a day while outsourcing
them to other companies to complete their decorations.
Shiny Bright Christmas ornaments were machine made with a silver lacquer
to enhance their decoration. The material useful for decorating Christmas
ornaments became harder to come by when WWII began. At that time, ornaments
became much simpler. Many homes were decorated with personalized handmade
ornaments. Store bought ornaments were fashioned of fewer materials at
this time since there was a shortage in useful materials.
Many companies have developed their own keepsake Christmas ornament collections,
in the past 50 years. Large glass Christmas ornaments made some interesting
memories with their shine and sparkle as each holds a cherished memory.
Such memories may include, choosing your favorite Christmas ornament to
hang on the tree, drinking hot cocoa as you help your family decorate your
tree and other precious memories that make Christmas such a special time
